[Books 2009] Heart-Shaped Box

I've heard a lot of good things about this so I ordered it from the library. Picked it up Saturday, finished it Sunday night.
An aging death metal star buys a ghost on an internet auction site (technically, his PA does) to add to his collection of the weird and macabre and trophy 20-something ex-stripper girlfriend. So far, so amusing.
However, everything in this book turns out to be more complicated than that. Just when you think you've figured out what's going on, the plot twists. Lots. Characters that started out as cariactures become fleshed out and reveal unsuspected levels of courage and commitment. As well as serious suspense, there's moments that are quite heartbreaking. I'd have to read it again, but I think there's some underlying serious themes in there too, about being passive and letting things happen to you, about betrayal and redemption.
I loved every minute of it. This is the best book I've read in a really, really long time.
