70. Call of the Jersey Devil by Aurelio Voltaire

Yes, *that* Voltaire, the musician.

Four teenage goths and a washed-up goth singer from the 90s are lured out to a "major goth music festival" in the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. But it's all a sham, and only coincidentally the gates to hell have opened and all manner of badness is spilling out.

The first 1/3 is funny as all hell. I'm pretty sure that the ineptitude of the bogus festival promoter is all stuff that's happened to Voltaire at some point.

While the story hangs together well and is well paced and thought through, I found myself losing interest as it went on, and the end (punch line) was straight from any number of Voltaire's songs.

Kind of disappointing but mainly because I'm a big fan of Voltaire's and I expected a lot.

Well, that was fun.

Voltaire arrived late, flustered and jet-lagged. So [livejournal.com profile] girfan and I looked after the merchandise stall to give him a chance to get changed. He wasn't sure how much to charge for CDs or what the exchange rate was for the other stuff, so we set the prices too.

Because I've mostly seen Voltaire live at Convergence, it had somehow escaped me that a lot of his fan base is really, really young. I was sort of confused about that till he rolled out the title song from his new album, Raised by Bats, that I realised he sings a lot of songs about growing up in a crappy small town where nobody understands you. Oh. I see.

I think every time I see him there's less music and more ramblings. Which is OK by me, because he's side-splittingly funny and if I want to listen to the music, the CDs have the songs performed with a full band.

The filthy Doctor Who song is less hilarious when you know the punch line going in. But I so related to his rant about how he doesn't get Doctor Who. The pornographic tribble song is even filthier and funnier than I remembered. I bought a copy of BiTrektual last night so now I can get tired of them at leisure.

I've forgotten the words to When You're Evil. That's embarrassing.

Can't wait till the new album comes out - he's got a lot of top-notch people contributing to it.

I also grabbed a Candy Claws cuddly toy - I was too cheap to pay for shipping when he brought it out, so I was really hoping that he'd bring some along. I do hope that the supply he brought last night was just for last night and not supposed to last the whole tour, because we sold a crapload of them (apparently everybody is too cheap to pay for shipping) and there were very few left at the end.

Awesome fun. Today is going to be a long day.

Made it out to see Voltaire at the Purple Turtle yesterday. The gig was excellent, and pretty much exactly what I expected - funny songs with even funnier stories told in between. Altogether great fun. I purchased three of the albums (despite being a long time fan, I've never acquired any of the albums, just the tracks on Projekt samplers). I was going to spend my last £10 on another album on the way out, but the queue was huge and we needed to go retrieve the car. I can always buy it online.

Unfortunately, I'm not in London today meeting people for breakfast and lunch and visiting the British Museum as originally planned. On Saturday night someone's car alarm went off every 15 minutes, for most of the night, so I had no sleep. Consequently, not only did I feel like a pile of poo yesterday, I didn't get any of the things done around here that needed to be done (unless you count mindlessly watching NCIS DVDs, and I don't), so I came back to Bristol after the gig.

My computer has been wobbly about booting up for a while, and finally did so on the fourth attempt this morning, so my priority constructive task for today has changed to moving everyone's email address into my gmail account. Backups are for people with functional brains.
