It's not as impossible as I thought, time-wise.

I thought the nearest major airport was Prague. However, I've got that little visa problem with the Czech Republic. That left me thinking I'd either have to drive through Germany or fly to Warsaw or Krakow (both hundreds of miles away) and that it would take a week to get there & back. Wrong.

Wroclaw, the nearest city to Bolkow, has an airport. There are two options: Lufthansa from Heathrow with a stopover in Munich, and Ryanair direct from Stanstead. Both are daily flights. For, as far as I can tell, roughly the same price (in the region of £150 return). Even though it's not direct, the former is preferable, as it's much easier to get to Heathrow. And, obviously, it's Lufthansa.

I can't really afford it, but it's getting more tempting daily.

I even checked with the Polish embassy in Ottawa's website - I definitely DO NOT need a visa to visit Poland any more!

There are a number of different small low cost airlines that fly in/out of Poland. Check http://www.attitudetravel.com and click on Poland and it will tell you about all the low cost airlines that fly in/out of Poland. Most of the airlines have flight maps.

They only fly to Warsaw, Kracow & Gdansk. Not a lot of people fly to Wroclaw - the options I found on the net yesterday are really the only ones.

Besides, the thought of Eastern European based cheap airlines is scary - visions of refitted Aeroflot planes abound!

When I was regularly travelling to eastern europe by coach the ex-communist company was great. Eurolines was somewhat more modern, but the drivers were constantly getting lost.
