I meant to mention this yesterday but it slipped my mind.

Scientist courts controversy with call for women to donate eggs

It's not like I'm using them for anything else. Chances are, however, than I'm too old and not in good enough health.

Putting aside my predictable feeling that the religious group protesting should just go live with motor neurone disease before making such pronouncements, the "critics" here seem to think that women are too stupid to make informed decisions about their own bodies:

Critics yesterday turned on Prof Wilmut's proposal, claiming it turned human eggs and the women who provide them into commodities. They also warned that any woman considering donating eggs must be fully informed of the health risks before undergoing the lengthy and sometimes painful procedure.

Because we certainly couldn't care about making progress in curing disease and thus making a contribution in some small way to making the world a better place now, could we?

It's at times like this I wish my brain still functioned & I could still write coherently, because I'd quite like to write an open letter to the papers pointing out how bloody patronising this is.

Well, like d'oh. I'm sure that doctors never ask patients to consider these things. It's not like the doctrine of informed consent is absolutely basic in medical ethics or anything, is it?

Quite. Have these people not been in front of an ethics committee in the last 20 years? Things have changed a wee bit.

I'm not using mine, either, but until they find a harvesting process that doesn't involve what a friend once feelingly described as 'two months of PMS' science can damn well manage without them.

That sounded pretty coherent to me. Go, write!

[livejournal.com profile] sheepthief pointed me here.

Where there's such a shortage of women donating for the treatment of couples, there's going to be a fight for resources and disagreement about priorities. But I guess there are relatives and friends of people with health problems which could benefit from this kind of research who would be willing to make specific donations. AFAIK there's no easy way for people to do this though as donations tend to be arranged through clinics.

Oh, that sucks, and I suspect sooner or later it's going to have to change.

There's no way anyone can have my eggs for making babies purposes (having said that, they'd be even less likely to want them than scientific researchers).

As far as I'm concerned, it's two entirely different issues.
