2006 Year-end meme thingy
Dec. 22nd, 2006 10:46 am1. What did you do in 2006 that you'd never done before?
Went to Argentina, bought grown-up furniture, went to a con.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I stopped making such things the year that my resolutions were to drink more, smoke more and take more drugs, and still failed to keep them.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
For the first time ever, yes.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
Not me, but people I care about had deaths in the family.
5. What countries did you visit?
Argentina, France, Canada. That sounds less exciting than it actually was.
6. What would you like to have in 2007 that you lacked in 2006?
Better health, a job I don't hate.
7. What date from 2006 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
None really. Lots has happened this year, but no single date springs to mind.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Hard to say. I don't feel like I achieved a lot. Going to Iguazu Falls was a high point though.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Not realizing how toxic my work situation was until it was too late. Leading to failing to follow the Vampire Beach Babes on their brief UK tour, or even make it to the local-ish gig because I had collapsed, for which I still haven't forgiven myself, even though Marcus has forgiven me.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
The usual, with added tension headaches. Which are more special than I can describe.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
My new sofa
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Drawing a blank here, but I'm sure I got excited by all sorts of people's behaviour at the time.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
The usual political suspects; the Annoying Co-Workers.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Travel. Sofa. Massage therapy for tension headaches (didn't work).
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
I get ridiculously excited about all kinds of things. My whole trip to Argentina was really exciting. FantasyCon was another high point. Seeing Violet Stigmata again at Beyond the Veil.
16. What song will always remind you of 2006?
Drawing a blank here too.
17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
Happier or sadder? About the same - happier about some things but still depressed as all hell about the state of my health.
Thinner or fatter? Give or take the same - I've probably lost weight over the last couple weeks because it hurts to eat, but weight loss from illness always comes right back anyway.
Richer or poorer? Richer, but about to be much poorer.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Just about everything: see real people in real life, go to gigs and clubs, read, see films, etc. Should have spent an extra month or so in South America.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Be miserable about my job. Insomnia.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
With Jason and the zoo doing absolutely nothing.
21. Did you fall in love in 2006?
With my new sofa.
22. How many one-night stands?
None
23. What was your favorite TV program?
The West Wing, which sadly finished. Surprise new favourite of the year is Grey's Anatomy. As of this week, Carnivale rocks my world. I still spend way too much time watching the CSI and Stargate stable of programmes.
24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I don't think so.
25. What was the best book you read?
I read a lot of damn good books in 2006, but have trouble choosing a favourite. John Connolly's Nocturnes blew me away; in the non-fiction category Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything was consistently entertaining and enchanting. Selected bits of The Best American Travel Writing 2003 were life-changing.
26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Muse, Duke Special. Which is just about all my musical discoveries. I was unpardonably slack in that department this year.
27. What did you want and get?
New sofa, West Wing Series 1-6 box set
28. What did you want and not get?
My health back; lots of minor things but nothing important otherwise.
29. What was your favorite film of this year?
Another difficult one - I saw a lot of films this year, and a good proportion of them were Damn Fine. Contenders include V for Vendetta, The Constant Gardener, Mirrormask. The last 10 minutes of Over the Hedge is the funniest thing I've seen in a long time.
30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Nothing on my actual birthday, but on the weekend before went to Canterbury for Dr Trafford and Dr Keen's Awfully Interesting Historical Adventure, which was tremendous fun. I was 38.
31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Better health, the ability to concentrate.
32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2006?
Shambolic
33. What kept you sane?
I was going to say sheer bloody-mindedness, but there's been a drop-off in my sanity recently.
34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Johnny Depp and David Bowie. As always.
35. What political issue stirred you the most?
All sorts of things. Domestically, ID cards. Internationally, I wished I could be in Bolivia because big things are happening there.
36. Who did you miss?
Everybody. All this isolation is not good for me.
37. Who was the best new person you met?
I joined Bristol Bibliogoths and that's worked out pretty well.
38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2006:
Quit while you're ahead.
39. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
Drawing a blank on this one too
