Back from our Scottish holiday, which was too short but loads of fun. Drove to Kendal on Saturday, and continued on to north of Aberdeen on Sunday. Many thanks to
sheepthief and
vodkafrenzy for the generous hospitality. Spent Monday exploring up there, and on Tuesday picked up Ismay from Porthleven and went to Edinburgh, where in addition to guerilla tourism (limited time and very specific objectives) we met up with
zotz for food, drink and conversation. Yesterday we drove back to Bristol, and today was spent wandering around Avebury and putting Ismay on a bus back to London. I had a nap as soon as I'd safely seen her off, but I'm still pretty exhausted.
I greatly enjoyed Glasgow Necropolis, Mary King Close, and Rosslyn Chapel (more on those when I've had some sleep). Up north, we had lots of fun finding obscure stone circles with the help of the OS map, as well as some of the better known ones. Didn't see as many megalithic monuments as planned because we spent a few hours at Fyvie Castle instead, which was also beautiful and interesting. There's absolutely tons to do (megaliths, castles and nature) in the Grampian region, so will definitely be back.
Ismay's coming back for 3 weeks next year and there's talk of her holding a joint birthday party with four of her cousins (all the week before mine), so if we can't get to Convergence in Ybor, it looks like my 40th will be spent being drunk in a field in northern Scotland, which sounds like a fair alternative.
