I can ride a bike!
Aug. 27th, 2007 05:58 pmIt's more exciting than it sounds. I haven't regularly ridden a bike since I was 19, and not at all since I was 22 or so. A couple years ago, walking home from the bus stop was a challenge.
But the agency rang on Friday offering me a lucrative month-long contract not far from here, but in a place not easily reached by bus. So a couple of emails later and thanks to the generosity of
hirez, I have a bike. Yesterday I bought a helmet. Today I got up the nerve to go out on it.
The idea was for
lastaii to ride with me up to where I need to go so we could find the best route, but all we ended up doing was circling the estate a few times getting me used to being on a bike again (the resemblance to being on the exercise bike is not great).
And I can do it! I didn't fall off or crash into anything and I discovered that it's not so much the lack of power in my legs that I need to worry about, but everything else.
I don't start up there till Thursday, and I'm only working part time tomorrow and Wednesday so I'll be able to take the bike out for more extensive spins. I also discovered that the bus options are not as bad as I thought - I can get one bus to within an acceptable walking distance, but it doesn't run very frequently. I think I might go on the bus for my first day so I don't arrive needing to get changed and not knowing where to park my bike etc.
