Finally saw The Prestige today. Loved it, even though I figured out the bit with the twins (that one was supposed to be obvious, right?). Completely failed to catch on that Tesla was played by David Bowie until the closing credits. Bad fangirl!

I forgot to mention that a few weeks ago I finally got my hands on Pan's Labyrinth, which was every bit as wonderful and beautiful as I'd expected. I'd read so much about how violent and gory it was, that I'd been afraid I might not be able to watch it, but there was nothing that was troublesome. I might even get my own copy at some point.

About the same time as that, I saw Volver, another film I had desperately wanted to see in the cinema but hadn't got to. I'm now kind of glad I didn't, because it was something of a disappointment.

Best thing I've seen on DVD lately wasn't a film, but a BBC mini-series - Messiah 1 with Ken Stott as a detective trying to solve a particularly gruesome series of murders. I caught Messiah 3 and 4 when they were on TV, and both of them were very good, but not a patch on the first one. It was edge-of-your-seat stuff from the beginning to the end.

Speaking of TV, what happened to the new series of Rebus? It was interrupted for the Rugby on Friday and isn't listed for the coming Friday either, but there's supposed to be two episodes left.

While I'm on the subject, has anybody else noticed that the theme to Desperate Housewives sounds an awful lot like the theme to The Simpsons?

AHA! That's the film I wanted to see when I picked up 'The illusionist' my mistake. Well, not that much of a mistake - Ed Norton's always good.

I really enjoyed the first Messiah but thought the later ones really went off the boil.

I loved Pan's Labyrinth, but cried like mad at the eding. It's odd; I find the ending of Betty Blue uplifting because she's finally free, whereas felt the ending of PL was a tragedy fo a poor mentally ill child, whereas Pete hates Betty Blue's ending because Betty is dead and Zorg's alone and thought the ending of Pan's Labyrinth has hope because the child may now be a princess.

The Prestige: I honestly don't know if the twins thing was supposed to be obvious or not 'cos I'd read the book so I already knew. NB: The book is well worth a read - it's quite different in parts, although the main story is the same.

Pan's Labyrinth: liked it but not as much as I liked The Devil's Backbone.

Messiah - the original - was very, very good. I'm re-reading the book at present. The quality definitely fell off somewhat in the later series (plus the continuation of the title didn't really make sense!)

Rebus: I noticed it wasn't on on Friday 'cos of Rugby, then was very surprised to discover that the match that everyone was going on about wasn't til Saturday. Did they actually have any Rugby on on Friday or was it all puff for the Saturday match?

The rugby on Friday was the match for 3rd and 4th place. We failed to get to the newsagent on time and had an inferior television listings mag which said that Rebus was going to be on, and were thus somewhat surprised to find the rugby. We have an even more inferior listings mag this week which says there is no Rebus at all this week, but I might tune in just in case.
