[film] The Orphanage
Mar. 22nd, 2008 07:22 pmWow! It's entirely possible this has just replaced The Changeling as my no. 1 favourite ghost story film of all time.[1][2]
A woman who spent some time in an orphanage as a child comes back 30 years later with her husband and son to open the building as a residential home for special needs children. Her son makes lots of imaginary friends, and Weird Shit (TM) starts to happen.
The house is fantastic - huge, with lots of places to explore and hide things. And just beautiful! There's a cave on the beach and a defunct lighthouse. I saw almost all the "made you jump" moments coming, but everyone in the cinema still jumped! One such moment comes out of the blue, though, leaving me thinking "did that just happen?" for a second or two.
The ghost story is excellent - not scary (though a few moments are, a bit), but definitely creepy. Seriously creepy.
Go see it!
And a note for Bristol people - I didn't realise that matinees at the Watershed are cheap. And here I've not been going lately because I thought I couldn't afford it.
[1] I haven't seen The Changeling in years; clearly what's needed here is head-to-head DVD viewing when The Orphanage comes out.
[2] Interesting parallel - they both have "what do you want from me?" moments.
