Despite having a not enough painkillers day, today was pretty successful.
Watched the new West Wing episode last night; there's a couple scenes where Josh is pestering Donna to do stuff for him that she's already doing. The line "unless that's what you're already doing" comes up a few times.
There's days when that's my life, and today was one of them. I got to give one of the consultants The Look because he was actually holding on to the piece of work he was asking me to do. I also got to prove that I'm miles ahead of the current junior doctor numerous times, but that's less of an event. He does, however, grovel nicely before he asks me anything. In the absence of both the boss and the regular cystic fibrosis doctor, nobody is even pretending that anybody but me runs the unit. Up to and including asking me which antibiotics we use to treat particular bugs (the answer was "guys, you can't even pronounce it, you don't know what it is, and we don't have a policy.[1] You'll have to ask the other consultant").
[1] which they'd know if they'd read the protocol, but why bother when I know it inside out.
Days like this I not only feel valued and competent, I feel like I could move on to something more responsible and fast-paced, like I could work in a West Wing type environment. Then I wake up to days where I stumble in at 9:30, pretend to work and pray we don't have any crises. And the days when I don't turn up at all.
At lunch time one of the reps came in. Reps always bring cool stuff. Usually my definition of cool stuff stretches to pens and Post-it notes and other stuff I depend on to run the office. But today I got a full set of Russ bean bag African animals - a rhino, a lion, a monkey and a zebra. They're adorable and take up the whole of the top of my monitor.
