47. Gothic Nightmares: Fuseli, Blake and the Romantic Imagination edited by Martin Myrone

I recently noticed I have a bad habit of buying the books that accompany every art exhibition I go to and never read them - as if the big books at the end of the to-read line are there for decoration. As I think this one's been hanging around the longest, I decided to start with it.

It starts out with essays by Marina Warner and Christopher Frayling, both heavyweights in the field of the gothic and popular culture 1780-1820.

The whole thing is incredibly interesting, and even though this is not unrelated to my PhD studies, there is an awful lot that was new to me (and it reminded me of a lot of things I had forgotten). It was kind of a weird experience though - "I used to do this for a living, didn't I?", even though I worked on the literary rather than the visual side.

Oh, and I really like Fuseli - apparently a lot of his work lives in a museum in Zurich. Cue evil plans.
