70. Miss Smilla's Feeling for Snow by Peter Høeg
Did I not do this last week?
This month's Bibliogoths read.
I read it over a decade ago and wasn't going to bother again because I didn't recall liking it that much and I have two other really good, lengthy books on the go, one of which can't be renewed at the library. (The important thing to remember here is that I don't remember what I read last month, much less something I read over a decade ago).
At the last minute I thought I'd give it a go, and to my surprise really enjoyed it this time. Of course, in the intervening 10 years I've developed an interest in Arctic regions and peoples. I must have mellowed some in that I'm no longer bothered by the fact that it can't seem to decide whether it's arty post-colonial angst or a thriller where lots of stuff gets blown up. I get, and can get past, the fact that the characters aren't supposed to be likeable.
It has some flaws and there are annoying bits, but overall I was pleasantly surprised.
I didn't do stats on my October reading. I read the usual amount, but it all came from the library, and I have had several major retail accidents (some in November but I've lost count). Suffice it to say that I've undone any inroads I'd made on the size of the to-read pile this year.
November's going to look pretty poor; I'm still bogged down in the two long books I mentioned above; they're both awesome but the end is only in sight for one of them.
