Psst - anybody want a gerbil?

or several?

We've had an explosion at the shelter where I work. Or rather, someone had an explosion at their home and brought the resulting little (and not so little) gerbils into us.

We started out with about 70, mostly mothers and babies, some single males. Most of the mothers were pregnant again, so some have had a second litter. Until today, the second litters had thankfully been small (2 and 3 little ones), but last night one gave birth to another 7 of the pink guys!!!

It's wall-to-wall cuteness, but it's hard work, and we're rapidly running out of space, and most of the young ones have yet to be separated into boy and girl groups.

We've got both sexes and every colour imaginable. They're all healthy and the adults are all tame and friendly. The co-ordinators did do an appeal in the local paper, but there hasn't been much response - it's probably the wrong time of year. If anyone reading this knows anyone in the South West of England who is interested in gerbils, email me or leave a comment.

Still, the enormous squeeze on space has had the effect that I've got six 4-week-old rats for the week. They can't go to homes for another week or so, so I've taken them. I thought they'd be fun for a week (and I wanted to remind myself what young healthy animals are like, as generally I take home all the old and sick ones) but be nervous-breakdown inducing for any longer. They're tiny (roughly the size of an adult gerbil) and very, very fast. And have never been handled. But they're soooo cute!

Wish I could help, but I went and married a man who hates rodents.
