Early Christmas gifts
Dec. 3rd, 2003 08:32 pmI checked out the Virgin sale today while finishing up my Christmas shopping and got two cool bargains - the first was Kirsty MacColl, "The One and Only", which is a cash-in after her death thing, but which importantly contains "A New England" and "They Don't Know". They are the only two songs I was particularly bothered about, but for £3.99 I didn't care! The rest is mostly background filler - nice, but doesn't really keep my attention. Unfortunately it's only early stuff from her time on Stiff records, so "Walking Down Madison" and "Fairytale of New York" are not included.
I always feel like a complete under-achiever anyway, but the liner notes say that she was only 18 when she wrote "They Don't Know". That had the usual effect.
I also purchased the first Strokes album, because it was £6.99. While it doesn't contain the song I really, really like (12:51, which was on the Observer freebie last week), it's good fun. More Loud Reed than the man himself in places.
Also picked up a copy of "The Gashleycrumb Tinies" in Waterstones because, believe it or not, I didn't have it already!
My planned early gifts (Pirates of the Caribbean DVD and the Indiana Jones box set) arrived in the post today, but I won't have time to watch them until Friday night. I still haven't seen Pirates.
This is all very nice, and quality stuff, but I've got to get less depressed soon or I'm going to run out of money.
