I've been sucked in. The books and the film. Lovefilm finally sent us the first disc. It's an HBO production so they think it's big and clever to only put two episodes on each disc (they do the same with Boardwalk Empire, but I don't mind about that). We jointly decided to order the seasons 1-3 box set instead of waiting.

Meanwhile I've started the first book.

I mentioned this to one of my co-workers - it took her somewhere between 3 and 4 months to read all the books. I read faster than her, but she works fewer hours and isn't always reading at least one non fiction book alongside, so I think thatps probably a fair estimate.

Initial thoughts - it really is the Wars of the Roses, isn't it?

Also as pointed out by my co-worker, there's nothing in it that you haven't read in other fantasy books, but that doesn't stop it being a real page-turner.

I'm schlepping the book around in my backpack for the time being, but if the threatened banishment for work takes place soon I'm going to have to sort out a Kindle arrangement.

I got given the first couple of books when they first came out, as review books. Back in those days, pretty much every phone-book-sized fantasy novel was pretty dire, I was relatively new and so close to the bottom of the pile for work, so I got them dumped on me. What a nice surprise they turned out to be! I'm really pleased the HBO series does them justice.

We've got series 1 & 2 on disk. Binge-watched the first during our weekend away at The Bell, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Yes, it very much is WotR (or seems to be given my sketchy knowledge of history) but with women who kick arse. The female characters are especially gripping, even if they're not always likeable.
I'm also pleased that nobody has a Mummersetshire accent, which is unusual in fantasy stuff.

I also came in to comment that the main difference between this and other fantasy I've read (in general) is that the female characters are ace. They have actual believable personalities and interesting ones at that.
