25. Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel

Finally, finally got round to reading this. Started it on the plane but it took a while.

Absolutely wonderful, beautiful prose. The story is dream-like yet brutal. The TV adaptation was faithful to the book - a lot of the best lines were used. You know Cromwell is a shit but he does most of his dirty work off stage, the book shows him in his human and vulnerable moments.

The only other book of Mantel's I've read is Beyond Black, which I was never sure that I liked but couldn't put down. Now that's what I call good writing. Wolf Hall is in another class altogether, though.

Wolf Hall is immense - if anything I found Bring Up The Bodies even better. Can't wait for the last one.

Beyond Black is the next one of hers I want to read, because of the supernatural premise, but the one about John Hunter trying to get hold of the giant's bones sounds pretty interesting as well.
