I think [livejournal.com profile] 50_ft_queenie was asking about this, but might be of general interest.

I've finally been home & conscious long enough to listen to the New Dark Age compilation CD.

Overall, it's pretty impressive. It has a good international selection of bands, with good representations from the UK, Europe, the USA and even Australia (yay for Ikon!) and is a good assortment of stuff I know, stuff I've heard of but not heard before, and bands I've never heard of.

It's a big compilation so obviously some tracks are better than others. I already knew that I don't really care for Penis Flytrap or Altered States, and there's a few tracks in the middle of the 2nd CD that are too much rock, not enough death, but I don't think there's any that will make me hit the "skip" button on my CD player on a regular basis.

The big exciting surprise was the song by Creta, "Silence". Never heard of them, but it really made me sit up and take notice.

Another nice surprise was the Ghost of Lemora. Another band I've been remiss in checking out so far.

I was a bit disappointed with the Last Days of Jesus track the first time, having heard great things about them, but on a second listening I rather liked it.

The not-so-exciting surprise was the Scary Bitches track. I've not heard any of their stuff before, but heard people I trust rave about them. "You'll End Up Looking Like the Scary Bitches" has a good tune, but appalling vocals and stupid lyrics[1]. I could possibly stomach the lyrics if the vocal wasn't so damn awful. I try to pretend I'm not a humourless old cow, but this just left me cold.

For music of this variety, I prefer the Starvox compilation. [2], but New Dark Age is well worth buying as well.

[1] This is the second time in a week that I've made that comment. Could it be a regular feature of B-team deathrock bands?
[2] Erm - quite a lot, actually. Available from darkcell digital music for £6.99 including postage!
