The usual stuff and nonsense
Jul. 15th, 2004 08:20 pmI didn't make it out of the house at all today. I'm feeling distinctly viral, but the main problem is my hips hurt like hell & mobility is an issue.
Come to think of it, this happened at about this time last year. I remember because we couldn't get to the cinema to see Pirates of the Caribbean, and my birthday was a washout. I don't know whether that's the good news or the bad news.
Need to be up for doing stuff by the time that Mongolian film comes to the Watershed though.
Being stuck in the house isn't so bad - I've started reading Neil Stephenson's Quicksilver and I'm enjoying it immensely. It's got some interesting historical observations, and some amusing one-liners. Mind you, I've enjoyed all his books a lot, with the possible exception of Snow Crash, which I thought had a couple of cute ideas but was terribly derivative. I know a lot of people didn't like Cryptonomicon, but I think that's my favourite so far.
Plus there's a new series of Waking the Dead (The BBC does Cold Case & CSI rolled into one, and I think it's done really well), and the fifth series of The West Wing starts on E4 this week. Speaking of West Wing, I've been watching the new Rob Lowe vehicle, The Lyon's Den. It got canned in the US really quickly, and although I spent the first episode going "he left West Wing for this?"[1], it's turning out to be pretty good. But very, very dark and tackles exactly the issues prime time US TV doesn't deal well with.
[1] I know. He didn't, he left in a hissy fit over no longer being the highest paid actor on the show.
The first season of Millennium is out on DVD. I'm not so keen on the later seasons (it went all conspiracy theory and terribly uneven in quality), but I thoroughly enjoyed the first season. I think I'll wait, as I ordered some CDs today, I'm trying to save money, and I need to buy some stuff for the house soon. (Note to self: Stay away from play.com).
