General Stuff Update

I just noticed in tonight's episode of Smallville that the Metropolis scenes were shot somewhere in Canada - there was a TD bank in the background, and a Canada Post truck. It didn't look like TO (though it could have been parts I'm not familiar with), but my money's on Vancouver. Because it rains in every single scene.

Jason gave the lawn its annual mowing, and we discovered that New Bunny Jerry has the Original Bunny Snuffles approach to power tools, ie "cool!, can I help?" rather than the Sensible Bunny approach, which is "Ow! My delicate ears! Must go hide!".

Or, how little does anyone want my vote.

I do not live in a marginal constituency. Labour's last majority in Bristol East was 18,000 votes, and 22,000 in 1997. So far, we have had one leaflet from the Green party, one from (spit) UKIP, and about five from Labour. Maybe we'll get more interest from candidates as the election gets nearer. If we don't hear from the Lib Dems I might be tempted to take offence and vote Green.

Still not entirely well, even by my standards.

I reckon you could have fun with UKIP. Especially if you get Jase to lure any canvassers in and then say in as broad a Canadian accent as possible "So, what have you got against immigrants?"

I have the same stock reply for UKIP as I have for the Conservatives - "I'm an immigrant who's taking your jobs - I thought you weren't interested in my vote".

They don't canvas round my area. I'm not sure who they'd get shorter shrift from, the Poles (who are also mostly pensioners!) or the North Africans (who are also muslims).

I never get the chance. (What I really want it to see how racist they are, ie. will they backpedal and say no, they don't mean my kind of immigrant.) I don't think conservatives set foot in this part of town. (We just got our postal ballots. Our conservative candidate lives in London). I suspect UKIP are targeting this area because it's mostly a white working-class monoculture, but I think some slightly more multicultural areas such as Easton come in our constituency.

I saw a conservative candidate last night - he's standing in the council elections, not the general one, mind. There was this furtive-looking beardy bloke pushing things through doors, and his face was on one of the leaflets. I can't see how someone who scurries off when hee sees people coming is going to make a good coucil member, no matter what his politics are!

Most constituency parties are grouping together with their neighbours to concentrate on marginals.

For instance, most of the Cheltenham LibDems have been seconded into Gloucester.

And Bristol West is apparently very marginal indeed.

I knew that there's less campaigning in non-marginal seats, but I wasn't aware of the grouping together. Which does make sense, but how are non-marginals ever going to change if no party makes an effort.

In north american SF TV, it's usually safe to assume that it's filmed in Canada. I regularly find myself noticing locations re-used from The X Files.

Absolutely. Stargate SG-1, like the X-files, is entirely shot in & around Vancouver. Jake 2.0 was shot in Toronto ("if that's supposed to be DC, why's there a Second Cup? Wait - that was a TTC streetcar going by")

It was only notable because I've been watching Smallville since the beginning & never noticed before. And because I can't place which Canadian city it is.

Most seem to be in Vancouver. But Psi Factor was noticeably Toronto (as were all the early Cronenberg movies). However, I'm pretty sure Montreal was only used in The New Avengers (which really didn't work).

You can sometimes tell by the supporting actors, too. a) the accents are stronger, and b) you start recognising the actors in other things. Jo is always spotting people who used to be in Street Legal (which was great - LA Law but with british style wigs).

That's because Cronenberg's from Toronto.

I can't see Montreal really working as a TV set, at least not downtown - too cramped & hilly & *obviously* Montreal rather than generic north american city.

I've never actually seen Street Legal despite actually living in Canada *and* owning a TV (which I didn't throughout my undergrad career) for at least one of the years it was on. Everyone I knew just called it "TO Law" and wrote it off as an LA Law ripoff.

I'm a Bad Canadian when it comes to TV.
