The Day After Tomorrow.

Bo-ring. I blame Jason for its appearance on our rental list. It's not even funny for all the wrong reasons like Independence Day, nor does it have the potential to spawn another Mars Attacks.

Frankly I'm astonished that you agreed to watch it, though I suppose you have the advantage over me of being able to slate it with authority. I can't say anything really, as I refuse to watch it.

It was pretty bad. Even taking apart the plot from a scientific POV got boring eventually, it was just so wrong.

Well, that much was evident from the trailers. Maybe one day I'll see it, but I'm going to have to be drunk first.

I've heard tell that Hollywood is combatting piracy by producing such garbage that no-one actually wants to see it, and this film does seem to be pretty good evidence of that.

Jo said that the tornadoes were good. and despite the scientific inaccuracies, it at least looked pretty.

I quite liked it. Most apocalyse films have dodgy premisees, this was done on a larger scale and therefore the premise was dodgy on a larger scale.

The point of the film was "how people would cope if..." and not "this is what will happen unless...". If you're watching it as an environmental scientist then yeah, it's easy to pick holes. Viewed as a drama about a large scale civil emergency, though, it is a pretty good film.

It's well acted. The characters are believable and react believably to an unbelievable situation. Okay, so it's no Soylent Green, but for an apocalypse movie, it has better production values than so-called classics such as Logan's Run and far better acting than cult favourites such as Omega Man.

Believable actions in the face on unlikely situations is what apocalpse movies are all about; the lives of everyday people, some of whom turn into heroes, some of whom turn into cowards, in the face of a near-future emergency where the extremes or exaggerated extensions of worst-case scenarios are happening.

I thought it was a good value-for-money movie. It's not a must-see, but for DVD rental is warrants a solid 6 or 7 out of ten.
