Jul. 27th, 2005 08:01 pmI want to do this on a future trip to Canada.
I must be losing it. For a start, it will not only be well nigh impossible to be vegetarian for the duration, but what I've read elsewhere about the cuisine in the region is not flattering, to say the least. It will also not be cheap - there may be nothing to buy out there, but I suspect there's a 6-week window in the summer when it's possible, ie. when flights and car rental are at their most expensive. That's before getting into the fact that my idea of the great outdoors is the distance between my house & the bus stop.
Personally, I blame the fact that I'm currently reading Theatre of Fish, which makes Newfoundland sound depressing yet endlessly fascinating. Newfoundland is the only province in Canada I haven't been to (admittedly I've visited zero territories).
[1] I disagree with the Guardian Review. I think the mixing of Gimlette's own travels with his great-grandfather's and general history of Newfoundland works very well. I haven't yet got to the part about the Innu so am unable to comment on that.
