I'm still not up to writing about it, but Jason has, here, with pictures.

I'll just add that the ruined chapel in the woods was possibly the niftiest thing I have seen, ever, in my whole life. It's so incredibly storybook - I didn't think things like that actually exist. It was a Cistercian retreat in the middle ages and has never been part of a settlement. We found it by zen navigation - as I was already tired we drove the car up a track, and when the road got too bad set out and walked. We knew we were in the right area, but not whether I'd picked the right bit of woodland, and were about to give up & turn back when we stumbled on it.

Our wanderings were brought to you by a book I bought the last time we were there called Dorset Pilgrimages: A Millennium Handbook. Ignoring all the New Age twaddle, it's a fantastic guide to neat & obscure things in Dorset that for the most part aren't covered in any other books. The walks are beyond me at 13-14 miles a go, so we cheated and drove to things. There's 10 "Pilgrimages" in the book, and we didn't quite see all the bits I want to see in the first one, so this book could keep us busy for quite some time.
