I was somewhat surprised to see how positive the Independent's review of John Connelly's[1] new book The Book of Lost Things is.

Then I saw who wrote it. (I was reading the paper edition, where the reviewer's name comes at the end).

I'm somewhat surprised and impressed that a mainstream paper got someone who knows & loves genre fiction to review it.

[1] He's the author I encountered at Fantasycon, went "I have to read his books", and on looking him up on Amazon, discovered that I have heard of his books, I'd just forgotten the name.

I should probably read more Kim Newman, I've got a book of his because it was two books in one volume and the other was Michael Marshall Smith. (Andy Warhol's Dracula is the Kim Newman.)

That John Connelly book sounds good too.

Andy Warhol's Dracula is, IMHO, not one of his best. Then again I prefer his short stories on the whole. Altho' I did love 'Anno Dracula'.

Anno Dracula's one of my favourites of his. I feel that sometimes he seems to have difficulty with his endings in other novels. I've just finished reading 'The Man From the Diogenes Club' (short stories) and it annoyed me at first but improved towards the end, possibly due to his slight change in writing style as the stories were written over several years.

I haven't read "Andy Warhol's Dracula" yet, but heartily recommend "Anno Dracula", "The Bloody Red Baron" (my personal favourite) and "Dracula Cha Cha Cha".

Kim Newman does a lot of reviews, books and film. He's one of those reviewers whose opinion I trust - if he likes something, I'm likely to like it too.

I've seen him on TV as a talking head on shows about weird literature & film, but haven't knowingly come across any of his reviews before.
