24 hour party people
Jul. 4th, 2003 10:08 pmI finally got round to renting that tonight. It was - a bit of a letdown.
I thoroughly enjoyed it up to the bit where Ian Curtis dies, and the tunes were top. Interestingly, I've always felt Transmission was JD's weakest song, but in the light of the "live" performance in the film I may have to re-evaluate that. I also did not know that they'd filmed the Russell Club interior scenes in Rockworld.
Unfortunately, I not only don't care a lot about the story of Factory Records after the early 80s, I also don't find anything to do with the Happy Mondays even vaguely amusing. I loathed the Mondays at the time and I still think they were a bunch of talentless shits.
Then there's my problem with Steve Coogan. I don't loathe him to the same degree as the Mondays, but I do find him quite stomach-churning. I know that Tony Wilson's supposed to come across as a complete wanker, but I was just seeing Steve Coogan characters being complete wankers. All their supposedly funny drug-induced adventures just make me want to slap them. Or lock them in a room to detox cold turkey.
So. Would have been much better if it had all been post punk and pretended Madchester never happened. I'm rather predictable.
