doing things that don't cost money.

Probably unwisely, I just paid off my entire credit card bill, leaving me exactly enough money in my account to cover this month's direct debits. I will not be going to that meeting in Belfast on Wednesday because I don't have enough money to cover waiting till the Trust pays me back (speaking of things that happen on a geoloical time scale).

Usually when I'm this broke it's because something bad happened, not because I got carried away on holiday. I've decided to go with being happy that something good happened in my life rather than being pissed off at myself for over-spending.

Removing more carpet counts as a free activity, so I tackled the downstairs hallway today. Less area and better visibility meant that I made significantly less mess. Oh, and being able to do it with the front door open helped. The floorboards downstairs are also in reasonably good condition, but some have rather large gaps between them (not hamster-losing size gaps like I've seen in some older homes, but not ideal).

Cleaning the shower was also a free activity. It's less likely to evolve its own ecosystem now, but I ran out of steam before I could do anything about the rest of the house. Both rats need cleaning but they're rats - they loathe being cleaned out so if I can stand it till tomorrow, it makes no difference to them. I'm beginning to wonder if Denzil is actually unwell - it's not that hot in here today, but he's still looking pathetic on top of his house. Mind you, his lump is an awful lot of weight to carry around in the heat.

We got more sound of fireworks without the pretty colours last night. From 8 to 10 it was intermittent. From 10 to 12 it was more or less continuous. I think it was further away this time, but next door's dogs weren't any happier. I miss living in a multi-ethnic, heavily student populated area. It was quieter.

Crap. You just reminded me that in addition to the lovely real sunshine that's finally, this past month, forced the previous winter's rather severe SAD depression away, I get to look forward to the Fourth of July, and to those evil, annoying things called "children" (And those even more annoying things called "teenagers" and "redneck white-trash".)setting off fireworks at all hours for at least two weeks on either side of it. Bleah. :P
