Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter give inspired, demented performances. It's Tim Burton so the visuals are, not surprisingly, right up my street. There's an interesting use of windows and mirrors to show points of view. The songs and orchestration are technically superior (though I still have some problems getting past the whole "musical" experience).

BUT like most films these days, it's a touch too long and it loses momentum in places.

I was also unsure about the whole musical aspect of it. I found that I didn't mind much at all, but then again, the combo of Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham-Carter and Alan Rickman will make up for damn near anything.

M and I were both surprised by just how dark and grim it was. I know, that shouldn't have been a surprise given the subject matter, but I thought that Burton + Depp + Sondheim = quirky weird fun.
