[meme] That 2008 thing
Dec. 23rd, 2008 09:40 pm1. Was 2008 a good year for you?
Definitely more good than bad.
2. What was your favorite moment of the year?
Many contenders, including Convergence-goers taking over Wet Willies in Tampa, sitting on the beach on Jekyll Island, Georgia, my brother's wedding or sitting on the front porch at
the_axel's pig roast.
3. What was your least favorite moment of the year?
Losing the Minimus bunny after only two weeks.
4. What are your plans for 2009?
At this point I don't really have any, which is extremely worrying. I exist to make plans that I rarely follow through. I have to get my Canadian passport renewed and should finally make a stab at getting my British one. I desperately want to go to Convergence but with the current exchange rate & house falling down don't see how I can do it.
5. What countries did you visit?
The Republic of Ireland.
Canada
USA - Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.
One new country and three new states.
6. What date in 2008 will remain etched in your memory?
I'm not so good with specific dates. 28th of June was my brother's wedding. The day Obama got elected (can't even remember that!).
7. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
I travelled a lot, but I haven't achieved anything of significance. I'm not a big achiever.
8. What was your biggest failure?
I may not have achieved anything, but I don't think that I failed all that spectacularly either. I'm willing to be corrected, though.
9. Did you suffer any illness or injury?
I got not one but two extra chronic health problems (gastritis and lower back pain) on top of the pre-existing cornucopia. Thankfully both are now under control, but they do make it harder to cope with leading a quasi-normal life.
10. What was the best thing you bought?
My holiday to the US and new mattress.
11. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?
The usual public figure suspects. Thankfully I seem to have distanced myself from people in my own life who make me appalled and depressed.
12. Where did most of your money go?
I spent nearly 5 weeks in North America and you can ask that question?
13. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
An awful lot. But I get really, really, really excited very easily.
I got terribly excited about absolutely everything on our trip to the States.
14. What songs will always remind you of 2008?
The whole of the Killers Sam's Town album. Anything by The Passing Hour or Voltaire.
15. Compared to this time last year are you:
a) Fatter or thinner? Fatter. Only I could get a medical condition which meant I could barely eat for six weeks and still gain weight.
b) Happier or sadder? Objectively, about the same. I've had brain chemistry issues since we got back from the States, but that's brain chemistry and not me.
c) Richer or poorer? Exactly the same. I had a ball this year, but saving didn't happen. Nor do I owe anything.
16. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Socialising with Actual People In Real Life.
17. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Being in pain, being depressed.
18. How will you be spending Christmas?
At home with
lastaii,
nasrat and
techbint and large amounts of food and drink. Which is just the way I like it.
19. Which LJ/MySpace users did you meet for the first time?
a_carnal_mink after more than a decade of online acquaintance!
I went to Convergence, so many more. If I make a list I'll leave someone off - you know who you are!
20. Did you fall in love in 2008?
with Jekyll Island, Georgia and the Florida Keys.
there is no 21 in this version.
22. What was your favourite TV show?
Off the top of my head, Wallander (both Ken's and the Swedish versions) was excellent. I just took two of the books out of the library. I've cut down on TV a lot this year.
23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Don't think so, but I have the memory of a goldfish.
24. What was/were the best books you read?
I read a lot of good books this year, it's hard to pick the best. I'd go for:
Fiction - Philip Reeve, Here Lies Arthur
Non-fiction - toss-up between The Wisdom of Whores and Ghost Riders.
25. What was your greatest musical discovery?
The Killers. I think I became aware of them last year (I know, I'm slow), but this is the year I listened to Sam's Town A Lot.
Yes, I suck these days when it comes to discovering new music. Not because I don't care, but because my memory and attention span suck so badly.
26. What did you want and get?
My awesome holiday to the States. As always, I have accumulated a lot of Stuff I love.
27. What did you want and not get?
Materially, not so much. A social life would have been cool.
28. What was your favourite film this year?
Saw a lot of very good films this year (mostly on DVD), but The Orphanage is the winner.
29. What did you do on your birthday and how old were you?
I was 40 and on my actual birthday I was too jetlagged to go to work and the sum total of doing anything that day was buying a new Dyson Animal as the old vacuum cleaner blew up the day before we went on holiday.
The celebrations took place a week early at Convergence.
30. What one thing would have made your year more satisfying?
dunno - not being sick so much would have been an improvement, but otherwise I had a pretty satisfying year.
31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2007?
same as always. I even have new skinny fit jeans so I can be a proper jeans & t-shirt goth again.
32. What kept you sane?
Spending the summer in a less miserable climate. The comedown has been a bitch, though.
33. Which celebrity did you fancy the most?
Johnny Depp. Duh.
34. Which political issue stirred you the most?
The US election was gripping stuff. Currently, Zimbabwe.
35. Who did you miss?
Everyone I didn't get to see enough of.
36. Did you treat somebody badly in 2008?
I hope not, but I'm a shambolic insensitive wreck on my good days, so I probably did.
37. Did somebody treat you badly in 2008?
Management at work, but that's par for the course.
38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned this year?
All that stuff you charged to the hotel room is Real Money, you know.
39. What would you like to have in 2009 that you didn't have in 2008?
A life. Some home improvements. A British passport.
40. How many one night stands?
None.
41. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year...
gone blank. see my answer to 25
