books 2008 roundup
Jan. 1st, 2009 02:30 pmI appear to have read five fewer books in 2008 than I did in 2007. I'm not sure how that happened, especially with that episode of flu where I was knocking off a Harry Potter or a trashy thriller every day or two.
I seem to have read an awful lot of good books, but not that many that were life-changing.
I wish I'd written more about quite a few of them, but it seems that the only time I have insightful thoughts is when I'm out walking and they all exit my head as soon as I get near a keyboard.
My to-read pile is higher and more dangerous than ever. Buying baggage-limit-testing quantities of local history books while I was on holiday is the main cause, with working near charity shops & having nothing else to do at lunch a close second. It's a good thing I don't make stupid resolutions such as getting rid of it - the last thing I did before I fell over[1] last night was put a reservation at the library on The 39 Steps as I'd just watched the BBC's remake and realised I haven't read it since high school. In the way that my brain does, I was also reminded that I've never read The Riddle of the Sands, and my local branch has a copy, so I'll be picking that up on Saturday.
[1] Due to having been awake for more than 4 hours, not because of anything fun.
