2. Bad Science by Ben Goldacre

You either get one sentence or a page-by-page commentary on the entire book, so: Ben Goldacre takes on the nonsense that is presented as science in our culture, and outlines how our media encourages the spread of such nonsense and outright lies about science. why don't people know this stuff? It's not as if it's hard, as Goldacre points out, but the media think you and I are stupid.

Many of you have already read this. I don't read Dr Ben's blog (/www.badscience.net/) as often as I should, but I will from now on! Not an awful lot was new to me, but certainly enough to keep me turning the pages. I loathed 99% of the British media already, and now I'm better informed about why. On the plus side, Radio 4 has some good popular science programmes and on the Today show a reporter was querying a made-up government statistic that 80% of all prostitutes in the UK are trafficked. I'm still not going to give up reading New Scientist in favour of the mainstream media anytime soon.

If you haven't read it, go forth and do so immediately!
