Christmas, and Lame!
Dec. 27th, 2010 08:13 pmHad a lovely quiet Christmas which was only marred by
nasrat coming down with less-than-surprise flu upon entering our house. It's not that toxic, honest!
The best decision we ever made is to not do the mad, stressful scramble of Family Christmas and just chill out with whoever else is around.
Today, for the first time since the 9th of December, I feel almost human. I had just enough to drink on the 9th and the 11th to not sleep either of those nights, and that somehow threw my brain into a weird limbo and I just kept on sleeping badly. Add to that being cold all day (heating is shit to non-existent at work; thank goodness we have decent central heating at home), having to walk everywhere in hiking boots (heavier than my regular shoes) on ice (because shovelling the snow on their pavements would kill people here; don't get me started) and daylight which lasts from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm, and I've been getting steadily less functional till I reached zombie level in the middle of last week. It's impossible to separate out cause from effect, but I was beginning to think the magic medication had stopped working.
Lame! Yes, really.
On the 11th I twisted my ankle real good by missing a step at a seasonal party. I only wish I had the excuse of being drunk. It hurt like hell for 15 minutes but it was fine after that. Missed aerobics on the Tuesday but went to Body Conditioning on the Thursday, and when I got home my ankle was 3 x its normal size, but didn't hurt. The swelling had mostly gone down in the morning, and since then the cycle is that it swells up some during the day and goes back down at night. At no point did it hurt, though my range of movement was a bit restricted, till the 22nd, by which time I only had to make it through another day.
So I haven't left the house since Christmas Eve, and since then it has really started to hurt. Weight bearing is not affected, movement in some (OK, all) directions hurts. And the swelling has got worse.
I'll make an appointment to see the doctor when they open up again, but I'm unimpressed. Only a few weeks without exercise and I'm as porky as I was before I started exercising. I have a raging hatred of the exercise bike; in fact I'd got really bored with the gym in general and was enjoying classes much more. Ho hum. Anyway, I'll go lift some weights tomorrow. Also suspect that the only way I'll get useful advice about how to exercise without doing long term damage will be to pay to see private sports physio.
Speaking of unimpressed, my gym is only open from 8-4 all week. More or less the exact hours I need to be in work.
Anyway, I got all over my to-do list today, including stuff that has been lying around for months waiting for me to deal with it. I actually think that if I had the whole week off I could be really productive, but as that's not going to happen, I'll just have to do my best to be useful tomorrow.
