I have been catching up on the lovely Neil Oliver's A History of Ancient Britain (BBC2).

In episode three he visits the neolithic monuments on Orkney and I had my usual "must go there" reaction. I then realised that it's probably already too late to book anything to go this year, given the tiny window of time it's not too cold and dark. There's also the whole problem that I hate both boats and small planes/short flights[1].

Then he went to the Newgrange complex. Despite being (technically) in another country, this is a lot more accessible - ferries to Ireland aren't that cheap, but if I shop around for deals something should come up. We wouldn't need to stay for as many nights either. This plan has the added bonus that it can wait till September, when we'll really be ready for another break. Yes, there's still a boat involved, but probably cheaper than flight + car rental.

[1] I'd probably be OK to Orkney, but if I'm going all that way I should go to Shetland too, and the thought of that crossing just induces panic.
