So, I finally got around to watching Passchendaele. I've been putting it off because although I've been assured that it's good, and Canadian (Western Canadian, even), I'm fundamentally allergic to war movies.

Anyway, I'm really glad I finally watched it. Only about 1/3 of it is actually set in the trenches, and the cinematography is at its best in those parts. The rest is based in Calgary in 1917. It's kind of neat hearing them refer to home towns I've been to that never get mentioned in (inter)national media, like Rocky Mountain House. The film raises the issue of what attitudes to German Canadians during the war.

The plot is fairly predictable, but that didn't make the ending pack any less of an emotional punch.

Despite the fact that I've proven time and again there are very few films I can watch more than once, I think I'm going to buy the DVD.

Nice to hear it's watchable! I'll look for it.

It might offend your sense of the absurd :-)

A lot of the reviewers didn't like it because it's just a straightforward wartime love story. Which I think is its strength.
