This is a sword-and-sorcery epic, set in an alternate England in 1600, based on a series of stories by the creator of Tarzan.

Plot wise, it makes sense, but is a bit all over the place (I think they were trying to shoehorn in origin story as well as many of the elements of the original stories).

It's supposedly set on the Somerset/Devon border, in a non-stop rainy winter (sound familiar?). It was otherworldly yet felt very much like the West Country, which was a nice touch.

This is one of those films that I could name a lot of reasons why technically it isn't that good, but it was 100% Right Up My Street and I thoroughly enjoyed it, both visually and story-wise.

I'm after the short stories now - there's a cheap Wordsworth Classics edition, a lot of it's available on Kindle, and there's some very expensive hardback collections.
