The End of an Era
Dec. 15th, 2003 07:48 pmMoving on to The Bad.
On Saturday morning I had to take Snuffles on a one-way trip to the V.E.T.
This didn't come as a surprise - although she perked up a bit after she had the antibiotics, she has definitely been going downhill for the last couple of weeks and we were looking at probably taking her some time this week. But I got up Saturday morning to discover she'd lost the use of her back legs overnight and it wasn't fair to leave her till today.
I'm doing surprisingly OK. It's more weird than anything else, but partly I've been too busy to be anything but OK about it. I'm definitely going to miss her, and we're not getting another bunny. (There was never meant to be a third but Florence just kind of happened). I suppose it would be worse if she was an only pet, or if it had been sudden, but I've spent the last few weeks getting used to the idea that she wasn't going to be around much longer.
So. I'm no longer the girl with the big, mean, evil rabbit with the cute floppy ears. I still live with the stupidest bunny in the world, but that's just not the same.
And because Bad Pet Stuff never happens singly, on Wednesday night I got home from Christmas dinner with the shelter staff to discover that my Roborovskis had royally beaten the crap out of each other again, but much worse this time. I've had to split them up and I have tiny hamsters everywhere now. I did find the niftiest cage which can be seen here - it's the "Hamster Country" one at the top of the page, complete with integral wheel and free swimming pool (on a Roborovski scale, that's what the food dish looks like). We may no longer have our biggest pet, but it's too cold to put tiny hamsters in the conservatory, so I'm still short of space.
To top it off, Stan the Boring Gerbil is definitely unwell also. Which is also not a surprise, because nothing that eats that much and is that scruffy & skinny can possibly have been a healthy chap to begin with.
