30. A Question of Blood by Ian Rankin

This month's Bibliogoths selection. A re-read. I couldn't remember much about it, and I'd never rated it as one of the stronger books in the Rebus series. I think I liked it better this time around, though.

I generally liked it a lot but felt a bit let down by the ending.

I would have concurred about it being a good one for newcomers - I feel that it works very well as a stand-alone novel, and my other half found it easy to follow without having read the other books - but others in the group disagreed.

Maybe it's because I have a strong "tolerance for ambiguity" as they called it in language teacher training - something have you have to have in abundance when learning and teaching other languages. What I have no tolerance for is any detective series that has to be read in order to make sense.

I did try to explain that starting with the first books isn't necessarily going to hook you because Rankin hadn't really figured out where he was going with the series at first - certainly the earliest one I remember making an impression on me is Strip Jack.
