I had more thoughts at the time, but I saw it last Wednesday, so I've forgotten a lot.

Overall, I liked it. It's visually over the top and exhausting, and very pretty.

DiCaprio looks a bit old to be Gatsby (we're told the character is 32) but he plays the part really well, nailing the whole disconnected/not quite real quality. Tobey Maguire plays Nick much as I pictured him in the book - a bit clueless and an outsider, and everyone assumes he's harmless so he's privy to everyone's secrets.

It's more faithful to the book than I would have expected, if completely over the top.

The use of modern music worked well.

I'd put in the obligatory Westerner grump that North Dakota doesn't look like that, but all the landscapes are symbolic rather than real here.

And yes, it is long. I didn't feel that it's too long as I do with a lot of films, but it was definitely too long for a school night.

There was a trailer for the new version of Romeo and Juliet. All I had to say was "where's Jeremy Irons?"
