This year's Canadian regional ghost story collection from my mother is Ghost Stories of the Maritimes. (Interestingly, this doesn't cover Newfoundland).

It's having the predicted effect - making me really want to move to Atlantic Canada.

This happens occasionally and is stupid because Quebec City is the furthest East I've been in Canada. No one in my family has ever been to Atlantic Canada, despite my mother's best friend from school having moved to Halifax about 40 years ago. I've only seen the Atlantic Ocean from the other side.

I've finally figured out the attraction - it would be like moving to a brand new foreign country without having to deal with visas and foreign languages. Also it has more interesting history, having been settled that bit earlier. And pirates. I should, however, get off my bum and visit at some point. The reduced cost of living isn't that much of a draw, as the lack of job opportunities and low wages would probably offset this.

Speaking of visas and such, my mother said that it's become even more difficult than ever to get Canadian passports renewed. I need to do this before we go to Portugal. Joy. I might have to dye my hair whatever colour it was 5 years ago so they don't complain.

In other news, I'm in pain, my throat hurts, I'm still depressed and I need to go to work tomorrow. On the plus side, the mini hamsters are being unspeakably cute.

AFAIK, it's no more hassle now than it was 5 years ago.

As a result of 9/11 the Americans have got a lot more demanding about identification so many of my friends have had to get passports (renewed) in last couple of years and noone has reported any undue hassle.

The only thing that I can think of is that the passport photo has to be bigger than it used to be.

The Passport Offices website is really comprehensive:

The photo part could be interesting. Last time I got my passport done over here they let me get a standard UK photobooth photo, because we don't have "approved" photographers over here anyway. I wonder what kind of stupid hoop I'm going to have to jump through for that.

Get a snapshot & cut it down to size most likely.
I'd contact the High Commission as soon as you can if I were you.
I've always found them to be very helpful.

Last time they just sent me the forms and I mailed them back, completed. This time I may have to actually speak to them.

They've got all the forms on the website as .pdf so you can just print those out. I'd take a look through it to see what it says about photogtaphs.
