Insidious

Horror movie about a family whose son falls into an unexplained coma just after they move into a big spooky house and weird stuff starts to happen. So they move, but the weird stuff follows them. And it turns out that Grandma knows who to call, because it happened to the Dad when he was a boy.

Not bad, but not really compelling. It does not fall apart as badly at the end as all the reviews suggest. Where it goes is not where you expect if you watch a lot of this stuff; while I found it less satisfying for that, it is at least internally consistent. I think a lot of people were all butthurt that the bad stuff comes from an unexpected place and thus declared that it falls apart at the end.

Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale

A Finnish film involving dodgy dealings on the Russian side of the border, the "original" Santa Claus (ie a child-eating demon) being dug up by archaeologists and elves run amok in a remote redneck Finnish village.

A good deal of fun.

The World's End

Probably the best of the trilogy. While Hot Fuzz was funnier, Shaun of the Dead had a better plot. This combines the two, and has a kick-ass soundtrack.

Troll Hunter

Billed as "the Norwegian Blair Witch Project". Like Blair Witch, it purports to be found footage by college students. Unlike Blair Witch, it's actually good. It's funny, the plot holds together well, the special effects are well done on a less than shoestring budget.

They're confusing the original Santa Claus with his sidekick Krampus :-)
