[books 2014] The Gargoyle
Dec. 30th, 2014 11:48 am52. The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson
December's Bibliogoths book.
Not quite sure how I never heard of this - since I read it I seem to be seeing references to it everywhere. And the author's Canadian.
The book's about a pornographer and thoroughly dislikeable (but good looking) chap who is massively disfigured and burned in a car accident. While he is in the burns unit he is befriended by a woman, Marianne, who has mental health issues but insists that they have been lovers since the 1300s in Germany.
The first third is gripping - laugh out loud funny, wonderful turns of phrase. It kind of goes off the boil in the second third - it's still very well written but I started to wonder if it was going anywhere. It picks up a bit towards the end (and does indeed go exactly where I expected it to).
It's really well written, and nothing in the historical stories made me want to throw the book at the wall (it's really well researched), but something was missing. I'm not sure what.
