Peterborough, Ontario is flooded. (Coverage here and here, amongst other places, but those have the best pictures of the main streets). This is only vaguely interesting because I lived there for 3 years, and I'd be quite upset if there was much damage to the university. Which is located right on the river. As in some of the buildings rise right out of it.

One of the articles I haven't linked to referred Peterborough as "picturesque". They've gotta be kidding. It's a dump. A dump in which I spent some of the most important time of my life, but definitely a dump.

I'm rambling. I should probably go lie down.

Meanwhile, 10 million people in India are homeless due to the floods, but there's feck-all coverage on the TV news because that's happening to some poor furriners in bongo bongo land. Grrr.

There was plenty of coverage about India & Nepal's flooding on BBC1 yesterday and today. I didn't know about Canada until now.

The Ontario flooding is only getting coverage in the Canadian news sources, as far as I can tell.

I was amused when one reporter referred to Peterborough as a "tourist town". Since fucking when?

Oh, it gets tourists. It's more or less the entrance to "cottage country", so it's more a place tourists pass through to buy supplies rather than a destination in itself.

Summer in Peterborough goes like this: May and June are dead, dead, dead. 95% of the students have gone home and the other 5% are bored out of their minds (and mostly unemployed).

Then in July the tourists turn up, and we all wished we were bored again. Tourist presence gave us employment in restaurants, etc., but they're all obnoxious Americans on the way to the cottage, or in town for the night to trash the place, and were even less pleasant than the locals (which is an achievement in and of itself).

Peterborough's the world over take after their namesake then - the one in South Australia is pretty mediocre, and the original in the UK boasts that it's a great place to get to other places from...
