I have just discovered that the University of Bristol offers an M.Sc. programme in Library and Information Science, and that there is a part time option.

The bad news is, they expect you to already be working in a library. There is no way I can afford to take the pay cut that doing a non-qualified job in a library would entail, even if I could find one that would take me.

Manchester Metropolitan University run a course that's *very* similar (except it has more emphasis on electronic stuff) which requires a good first degree but no library experience. I hate these Catch-22 type courses. (Many Museum Studies courses are the same).

It'll be a few years before I'll be in a position to even think about doing it - I need to be out of debt and much healthier, but it's really frustrating to know that I can't get onto the course to do the one thing I really want to do. If I ever get around to it, I'll apply anyway, as I can probably make a case for having relevant experience, especially if I start doing medical journal searches and stuff in my current job.

But chances are if I'm ever healthy enough to be studying again, I'll be in Toronto, and their library science/archiving course doesn't require that you are already employed in a library.

There's a chance you might move back to Toronto? That would be very cool. :)

Well, I really really want to, but I'd have to be out of debt first (no laughing at the back, I'm on a programme and sticking to it) and have some money saved up as well. I'd probably have to be healthier as I doubt I'd find an employer who'd be as forgiving about the amount of time I'm off sick and pay me for it.

Plus Jason's not 100% sure, and the IT market would have to be stable so he could get steady work. He liked Ottawa better, but I've got to say that after many years of thinking it would be a terribly dull place, it's certainly got a lot more going for it than where we live now.
