Help with accommodation in Paris
Sep. 10th, 2004 09:13 pmWhile I'm obsessing instead of going to bed -
The cheapest hotel I can find is 5 min. from Pere Lachaise. I want to spend a day there anyway.
I'm pretty sure it's cheap because it's in the outer reaches, but those of you who know Paris better than I do, is it cheap because the area isn't safe?
I'm on a budget - I don't care if it's nice, I just care if it's safe.
If anyone knows of a cheap place to stay in Paris, help!

Date: 2004-09-10 02:52 pm (UTC)Pere Lachaise isn't somewhere I'd want to stay, simply because it's out in the sticks and there's not much else nearby. Pretty much all of "Paris" is safe though, because the bad stuff happens outside the huge barrier of the Peripherique (you really _don't_ want to go North beyond this). Bois de Boulogne is infamous (although I lives on the banks of it for about a week and never even saw a Brazilian tranny). The 18th (Belleville) is nice, but an acquired taste and would probably scare the passing tourist. My first flat was by Place Republique and the worst hell-hole I've ever lived in, but it was still perfectly safe to walk around (so long as my roaches didn't get you!). I believe it's yuppieville these days!
When staying for short breaks in Paris, I like to stay in cheap hotels around the left bank; Odeon or Musee de Cluny area. Heading East of this gets less touristy and has better grocers.
Places you really ought to visit: Musee de Cluny, Parc des Buttes Chaumont

Although Paris is expensive, it's not like anywhere is cheap these days, and at least getting there will be relatively easy.
