Having escaped a Crap Town or three myself, I know exactly what she's talking about.

And I couldn't agree more with the last sentence: "There is no shame in coming from a crap town; the real crime is to remain there."

What a great idea for an article. And a great ending. I too come from a crap town (Windsor, Ontario): industrial, small minded, anything new is immediately rejected, full of Canadian arrogance but lacking knowledge of Canada, etc. The saving grace is it puts thing into perspective, gives you something to rebel against, and the local art community (who are generally viewed as lepers) does manage to squeak out some originality.

Heh, I moved to one. And bizarrely, I really like it. Even the chavs. I'm quite happy to live in such a chavvy place, because at least it's honest. Beats Bath hands-down - none of the pretension, no stupid house prices, less heavy traffic, far better public services (ie doctors and dentists)...
