The down side of coming to work every day is that eventually I run out of stuff to do. Oh well.

When I was in high school, the two bands that saved my life were David Bowie and the Rolling Stones. I was poor then, and only ever purchased one Stones album - a greatest hits double lp called Hot Rocks. I played it to death at the time, and continued to listen to it sporadically throughout my undergraduate years. I haven't listened to it in years and am not even 100% sure I still own it.

So, last month (just in time for the Christmas cash-in) the new Stones greatest hits collection came out. Last week I finally got the delivery from Amazon (it was way cheaper with them, but now every time I go to the home page they try to sell me middle aged MOR albums like Dire Straits). I've been listening to it a lot. Yes, I still love the Stones.

I could bore you all with my thoughts on individual Stones tunes (which interestingly haven't changed much since high school), but instead will tell you the story about how the Stones played a key role in one of those "I am Not Like the Other Girls" moments. (We already knew that, but sometimes it just hits you in the face).

It was the last year of high school, lunch time in the common room. I'm talking to the two real muso guys in our year (why and how this conversation started I do not recall, but it's weird because they wouldn't normally have given me the time of day). Anyway, we're having an entirely geeky conversation about what is the greatest Stones track. Arguments referred to guitar parts, bass lines, killer riffs and nifty lyrics.

One of my female friends comes up. I have to emphasize that this girl was not stupid - she won big scholarships to impressive universities, but she tended to overcompensate for this by being excessively girly. She's trying to get in on this conversation (as she is used to being the centre of attention, not me), and comes out with "I don't know how anyone can listen to the Stones. They're so ugly". She was serious.

Oh, and 'Paint it Black', no contest, IMHO.

I misplaced my copy of Hot Rocks a few years ago and have been meaning to replace it for ages now.

This is where my goth card really goes out the door - I don't think Paint it Black makes it into my top 5!

And when I feel less awful I really must go check whether I still own Hot Rocks or not, as I think there's a few track on it that aren't on Forty Licks.

I have Rolled Gold on vinyl from a secondhand record shop, which is their 60s hits. Having never bought Hot Rocks, I would really like the new compilation.

oh, and...

1/ Wild Horses
2/ Gimme Shelter
3/ Sympathy for the Devil
4/ Jumping Jack Flash
5/ Waiting on a friend

Scarily close to mine, with the exception of waiting on a friend, for which I would substitute either Start Me Up or You Can't Always Get What You Want.
