[film] Blood Diamond
Jan. 20th, 2008 03:32 pmI hadn't bothered to see this in the cinema because conflict diamonds and child soldiers are really not news to me. But then the diamond industry tried to keep people away, and anything that pisses off the diamond industry deserves some support. By then it wasn't on any more, so all I could do was put it on my rental list.
Blood Diamond is unrelentingly violent and grim, but is nevertheless a very gripping story and the tension never really lets up. As expected, I can't say I learned anything I didn't already know about the war in Sierra Leone, child soldiers, conflict diamonds or how the cartels control the flow of diamonds worldwide, but somehow I doubt I'm the target audience there. Against the violence and grimness, there are more than a few gorgeous landscape shots (supposed to be Sierra Leone, I think were actually Mozambique).
Rent it. Piss off DeBeers and see a good film.
