Film, cake and nonsense
Feb. 12th, 2007 09:48 pmI watched The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe this afternoon. I never made it through more than 3 or 4 of the books as a kid, so I haven't been all that keen to see the film. I only wanted to see it because Liam Neeson is the voice of Aslan. Tilda Swinton was quite marvellous, but other than that I was glad I have a cuddly toy to sew together so I feel like I made some kind of constructive use of my afternoon. It's quite dull and quite ghastly at the same time. (I never picked up on the Christian theme of the books as a child, and to be honest it would probably pass me by now if I didn't know).
By comparison, The Interpreter is compelling stuff. A UN interpreter discovers a plot to assassinate the president of a made-up African nation which is not-Zimbabwe-honest-guv, with extra genocide thrown in. There's a slow half hour or so near the beginning, but it turns out to be quite suspenseful indeed. It's one of life's slightly odd coincidences that this turned up from the rental company just as I was finishing Shake Hands With the Devil.
This afternoon I went down to the Polish food shop and ended up with, amongst other things, the best damn piece of cake I've ever had. If I walk there and back regularly to purchase cake, will it burn off sufficient calories?
I don't think so - it's not that far away. Damn.
I went there in the first place to stock up on pickled gherkins. All this talk of pickling things has made me miss north-American style pickles, and as it seems to have been the practice of every culture that settled the prairies except the British, having a purveyor of Polish food so nearby is handy.
