Good Things
Nov. 14th, 2009 09:23 pmI think I'm having National Drunk Writing Night a week late.
Despite being lurgi-fied again, and the weather being appalling, the combination of which mean I am not in London doing my Christmas shopping this weekend, there are Good Things in my life:
1. A while ago
silentq recommended a cocktail involving gin, Kahluha and cream. I just made one. It rocks! I was a bit dubious about the gin/sweet liqueur combination but it's - interesting, in a good way. Tomorrow I'm going to try with Baileys instead of Kahluha, given that there's rather a lot of Baileys in the house, though I've realized more of it is minty or coffee flavoured than regular Baileys[1]. For a very long time, the only gin we've had in the house has been Bombay Sapphire or Hendricks. We're out of Bombay Sapphire and I don't think Hendricks would mix well in a cocktail (plus, Jason might kill me for diluting it) so I bought some Gordon's, and was surprised at how good it smells, and it works just fine in cocktails.
2. I just bought myself a Spotify account. And what am I doing with it? Listening to Purcell's Dido & Aeneas. Yes, I got Spotify to satisfy my craving for Baroque music. Deal with it.
Admittedly, I also just used it to try to figure out what version of "Eve of Destruction" I'm most familiar with, and failed. Yes, I've heard the original, the Dickies version and the Pogues version, but none of those are the one that lives in my brain. I'm wondering if some obscure Canadian band did it in the early 80s. This was set off by the version at the end of the "Mr Nobel" episode of "A Town Called Eureka" (which is kind of sweet & also not on Spotify).
I may become an even more intolerable music nerd than I already was.
3. Jason got a new cat from the RSPCA today. She is lovely (and *tiny*), but quite young (about a year) and thus much more lively than we've been used to. So far she and Roxy the Rabbit have behaved themselves in each others' company. Pictures will, no doubt, follow at some point.
Edit: I can't believe I forgot the important one:
4. Double glazing. ++++ In previous years, weather like this would have had me extremely stressed out that the windows were going to blow in, plus the noise would have made sleeping (and sometimes even reading or watching TV) impossible.
[1] Despite being mostly a non-drinker, one of the things I buy compulsively is alcohol (primarily liqueurs). I've been attempting to rationalise the alcohol collection lately, and been about as successful as I am with getting the unread books pile to a manageable level. I have at least chucked out some of our less successful flavoured vodka experiments.
