I'm trying to read more graphic novels this year. To that end I dropped a truly frightening amount of money at Excelsior Comics over the last month.

I started with The Doom That Came To Gotham because it's a stand-alone. It is based in alternative Batman universe based on the Lovecraft mythos where the murder of Bruce Wayne's parents is linked to other dimensional weirdness, and Bruce leaves Gotham at an early age to sail around the world.

The story opens in Antartica where Wayne is tracking down the Cobblepot[1] expedition where there is weirdness in the ice, and, naturally, brings it back to Gotham.

I'm not sure how qualified I am to comment on this. The only other Batman comic I've ever read is Arkham Aslylum, over 20 years ago. I only caught some of the Batman references because I watch the new Gotham series and have started working my way through Arrow. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

[1] Yes, that Cobblepot.

I finally went in to the new-ish comic book shop in town, Excelsior (Bond Street) some weeks ago, and came away with the first two volumes of Mike Carey's The Unwritten.

It's astonishingly good. The only thing that's stopped me going out and buying the lot is I'm having a temporary cash shortage. There are obvious comparisons to be drawn to Sandman, but I actually think The Unwritten is better - more tightly plotted, more concepts that I just think I've wrapped my head around only to lose my grasp.

Also got my hands on volumes 2 and 3 of Sandman: Overture which I finally got round to reading today. It's - not Gaiman's best work. It's not quite as bad as The Eternals, but it's very all over the place.

Also got the third graphic novel of Scalped, but I haven't read the first two since they came out in 2008, so I'm going to have to go back to the beginning before I get underway with the rest of the series.

There's ads for new comics in the Sandmans. Have any of you read Dead Boy Detectives? Like the concept, but Toby Litt's writing it. I read one of his books once and it was fucking awful (deadkidsongs, for the record. One year I will learn the more awesome the title, the more the book sucks as a rule).

Any other current titles I should be looking out for? I used to just get all of the Vertigo output back when they first came up with Vertigo. Yes, I'm that old.
