27. Raven Black by Anne Cleeves
This was dramatised on Radio 4 a while ago, and I couldn't resist a murder mystery set in Shetland.
The book isn't quite as good as the dramatisation was, but is above average. Cleeves has written loads of books; for the moment the only other ones I'm likely to look out for are the other three in the Shetland series (most are set in Yorkshire)
28.The Gone-Away World by Nick Harkaway
This was foisted upon me by
techbint. It's a near-future novel set in a slightly parallel world in which the post-nuclear military technology is one that takes all the information away from matter, and makes things Go Away. As such things have a way of doing, there are unforeseen side effects, leaving only small pockets of the world inhabitable.
The story follows a pair of young men growing up just before, and fighting in, the Go Away War. I love the writing - it's by turns silly, deep and heartbreaking. The author draws on an incredible range of influences (the ones I picked up aren't the ones he mentions in the Author's Note) in a very light way (ie five minutes after I'd read a particular line I'd think "oh, that's from ...."). The plot involves a betrayal so awful I could barely breathe; and a twist that makes everything that went before fall into place.
It's long, but well worth it. Highly recommended.
April reading stats
Books read: 7
Non-fiction: 2
Library books: 3 (I've had not one but two big accidents in the library)
Borrowed: 1
From the pile: 3
Bought: 3
So - er - not really reducing the pile at all. Again. Bother.
