My manager was on leave today, so the meeting to work out what exactly I'll be doing is on for tomorrow.

So - got all my stuff and my computer moved... delegated dealing with a crisis in the old department... and spent the rest of the day filling out my appraisal form, as it has to be in tomorrow and I've not had a minute to look at it either at home or at work.

In the good news department my new desk is closer to the stairs for ease of leaving the building.

I nearly bought a bike in a sale last week, but figured I don't have enough money, I can still get a second hand one cheaper, I'm not going to really use it, etc.

I've now lined up some temp work. Very part time, for very little money (so little, you can tell how desperate I am). It's easy enough to get to by bus (for those who know Bristol, it's in Cadbury Heath so I just get on either bus that comes past here and stay on till the end of the line) but that doesn't get round the cost of the bus. Fares goin' up AGAIN next week too. It's just over 3 miles from here - ie too far for me to walk, especially with all the hills in the way.

It would be perfect for cycling.

I'd go back and buy the bike today, except that I just got my credit card bill and it's bad. In the anyone want to buy a kidney? sense. And I start on Wednesday so there's no time to go looking in the small ads for second hand bikes.

I'm going to try walking it now, to see if it's feasible to at least walk home every day and save on some bus fares.

Edit: I got over halfway there before I realised I needed to turn back if I was going to make it home, so in theory walking home is do-able; am unsure about multiple days/week or doing anything constructive after I walk home.

The temp job is working out just fine. I'm doing admin in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. I have more responsibility and autonomy than I had in two years at the law office. The lady I am working for tells me what to do and doesn't want to see it, proof read it, or otherwise hear about it again. This suits me just fine. I am loving being in a room with one or two other people (depending on part timers), and having to go upstairs to fax and photocopy, instead of being stuck at my desk in the open plan all day. I can't describe the relief at being back in my natural environment. The days have just flown by, and when that happens I ingest much less caffeine and am not hungry all the time.

I'm going back to work tomorrow. It's 3 weeks of 3 days a week (just what I need) at the University of Bristol. I wouldn't have wanted to start this early, but it's really hard to get a foot in the door at the university, and if all else fails and I have to go back to office work, it's where I'd rather be. The hourly rate is so low that even I normally wouldn't bother, but I don't want to do anything that's remotely taxing my brain at the moment either.

I haven't been terribly productive lately anyway, so I'm hoping that adding some structure to my life but leaving myself more free time than full time work allows will help with that.

I broke my rule about sleeping during the day again, because at this point I'm more desperate to have had some sleep than to have my body clock properly set. It's going to get a nasty surprise come tomorrow morning anyway.
